My super-trooper had surgery today. It felt like déjà vu. Just 9 months ago he developed a hernia and had to have surgery. His hernia was on the right side. The doctor didn't want to cut Grant open on the left side to check for a hernia because there was only a 4% chance he would find one there. When there are low statistics involved, without a doubt, Grant will fall in that percentage. So, today we found ourselves as Legacy Emmanuel to fix another hernia.
Grant remembered being at the hospital, so he was prepared. His only concern was that he didn't want "the medicine that tastes like paint" (the valium). Again, the biggest trial was not allowing him to eat or drink all day.
Grant made sure we brought his Superman to keep him company. And when we got there, the nurses gave him a stuffed bear who he named "Matt" (after his anesthesiologist). He was a real hoot after taking the paint medicine… the Dr, anesthesiologist, and nurses were all standing around his bed laughing and saying how entertaining he was. He really was a fool (I think I got a glimpse of Grant if he were drunk…. And he's already pretty funny sober).
Here is his in his gown, just watching a cartoon, waiting to be called down to surgery. The 1 hour wait was a bit too long for Grant, he kept asking me when the Dr. was coming and informing me, "Mommy, I am being very very pay-shin."
Everything went well. The Dr. is sure we'll never have to see him again now, but I wouldn't be too shocked if we did. Here is his sleeping afterwards. The nurse told me to call her when he woke up. "He's not going to wake up," I told her. Sure enough, he wouldn't. She had to come it 3 times with a freezing-cold wet washcloth and rub it on his face and back….. He would stir, but never wake up. It took a lot of work, but he finally opened his eyes. He ate a couple popsicles, drank some apple juice, and watched the movie Antz, and then we were ready to go home.
He was greeted at home by Jefferson who was more than happy to do everything for his younger brother. Grant laid on the couch while Jefferson attended to him. He got him water and books without being asked. And when Grant said he was hungry, Jefferson washed, dried, cut, and served him strawberries…. What a sweetheart. The recovery last time was a nightmare, but so far things are looking good for tonight. He's already in bed asleep. I'm sure he'll be running, playing, and scarring me to death tomorrow!
