Monday was a special day for Shawn. He had his White Coat Ceremony. This ceremony is a "rite of passage" for the students who for the past two years have been just that, students. Starting this week, Shawn will be seeing his first patients.
The Ceremony was honoring the students and presenting them with White Coats. Quoted from the program, "the white coat is a symbolic, non-verbal communication used to express and reaffirm a fundamental belief in a system that society observes. The authority of dress is serious and purposeful, not social, causal, or random. It is a guide to both the patient and clinician on how to react and relate to one another."
The students filled in the seats. This picture is sort of jumbled, but it was the only one that caught a glimpse of Shawn in the back. Otherwise, he was pretty hard to see.
Several people spoke to the class. Dr. Yudcovitch was the keynote speaker, chosen by the student body.
Then, one by one, the names were called, and each student received their White Coat.
Shawn was nervous. He told me he wasn't, but I know that's not true. Look at this picture and tell me whether or not you think he was nervous…. Haha, I love you honey. I think this picture is hilarious!
Then he got pinned by Dr. Yudcovitch. The pin reads "Pacific Optometry Class of 2012"
All the students stood and recited the Optometric Oath. I got a little emotional (I don't know how I'm going to handle Graduation!) "This is a big deal," I kept thinking. This day marks a big day for Shawn. Like the speakers mentioned… this is a 'turning point' in their lives. Shawn is just one step closer to becoming a Doctor of Optometry. Way to go, Shawn. I am so proud of you!
The class, all crowded together for a picture
Shawn is on the top left…. Right here…
Afterwards they served us some delicious food, yum!
Me with my amazing husband
Shawn with his friends, (L to R)… Seth, Scott, Colton, Devin, Brandon, Eric, David, Shawn, Dave, and Aaron…..
And their super-supportive, wives… Jen, Jenny, Sierra, Me, Jen, Brianne, Erin, Tara, and Tana
And a group shot…
What an amazing night. The Ceremony really honored the students and made me feel proud to be married to one. Shawn, your hard work does not go unrecognized. You've earned every bit of prestige and respect given last night. You will make a fine Optometrist….. I know, because you look dang good in that white coat of yours!
